Nell Dipiero: What type of job is this for? If you are a kid in high school looking for a job, the references you will find will be very different than a person getting a job out of college and different than a seasoned employee looking for references for a job change later in life.1) People who work at the place. Are you asking people from within the company you are applying to, to be your reference? Usually you don't unless they are a top position person or is someone who referred you to the job in the first place.2) Do kids with jobs. Nope. Don't ask other kids to be your references unless the kid is a CEO of a real company or something. 3) Does Non-immediate family. One generally does not ask family to be references unless they were your boss at some point in your career. 4) Does Immediate Family. One generally does not ask family to be references unless they were your boss at some point in your career. So who do you ask?If you are a teenager looking for work, you sh! ould find your instructors in highschool to be your reference. Find instructors that you have good rapport with and have done well in their class. You may also ask your pastor/minister/rabbi/church leader type person for a reference, especially if you did church/faith/religion work at your place of faith.Another source of reference is a former boss at former employment. If you have family that owns businesses and you worked for them at any capacity then you can use them as references. If you did poorly at this former employment or you got fired... then you might want to look elsewhere. If you are on a sports team, academic team, or participate in some community activity or some extra curricular activity you can ask the supervisor of that activity to write you a reference letter or you can use them as a reference. If you are a college kid, just graduating and looking for references use the following:Bosses from previous part time employment/internships etc.Professors from class! es that you did well in, especially your majors classes.Colleg! e activities supervisors in activities participated in such as coaches on athletic teams, sponsors for clubs etc.If you are already employed and looking to change employment, you can use Co-workers in management positions that do not supervise you (otherwise your boss will know you are quitting...). Prior supervisors from previous employment are good. (Keep in contact, send Christmas cards and what not on occasion to keep your contacts.)As you get older and move up in the work force, you will move away from instructors, family, and activity references and focus on work related references. It is good to build up a steady network of associates in high positions to put on your reference list.Good Luck....Show more
